Multiculturally-Focused Therapy

Mft Page Let's Face ItLet’s face it: We’re living in a time…

… where hate crimes are up, civil liberties are being knocked down, and everyone’s getting called out. For so many of us, the world’s scarier now than ever.

It makes sense that you want a therapist who understands and can relate to your unique experiences.

We get that people are less likely to seek help if they think their therapist can’t understand or empathize with their background or cultural differences and experiences.

We aim to provide a safe space for you to bloom and grow into your most authentic self.

No matter who you are, your race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or ethnicity should never interfere with your access to excellent therapy.

At Sentient Psychotherapy, we value diversity, representation, and access to quality therapy for everyone.

Mft Page Let's Look At The NumbersLet’s look at the numbers…

Did you know that about 70% of therapists are women, 25% are men, and only 5% of therapists are non-binary?

Similarly, roughly 75% of therapists are white, while only 6% are Hispanic or Latinx, and 4% are Black.

That means if you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ and/or BIPOC communities, your options for working with a queer or BIPOC therapist are low. It makes perfect sense that you may feel more comfortable and connected to a BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ identified therapist.

Similarly, only 10% of therapists are Asians.

If you’re Asian-American, seeking a culturally competent therapist who implicitly understands your concerns can provide you with a deeper sense of comfort and safety.

At Sentient Psychotherapy, we have a diverse team of therapists…

… that not only represent the multicultural landscape that is New York City, but who are also well-trained in multicultural, feminist, and relational-cultural therapy.

20officeFrom the moment you enter our beautiful, calming office, you will experience the same care and support represented in all aspects of our aesthetically pleasing space.

We are committed to anti-oppression in all forms, as well as promoting the rights of all persons and all identities to have a safe space to flourish without facing discrimination or bias.

If you’re a minority, you’ll appreciate having a therapist who understands what it means to have faced a lifetime of biases and the issues that come with it.

If you’re a “guys guy,” seeking help is stigmatized and can be a hurdle when needed. Having a therapist you can open up to and get real with, is helpful!

And third-culture and first-generation New Yorkers have unique lived experiences that might be better understood by therapists who share their identities.

Regardless of whether your Sentient Psychotherapist shares your specific identities,
all our therapists are trauma-informed, culturally humble, and multiculturally competent.

We want to hear from you!

Working with your culturally competent Sentient psychotherapist,
you can let go of the need to constantly self-protect, control others’ perceptions, and struggle to fit in.

We’re ready to serve you with knowledge, sensitivity, and awareness!
