Pay What You Can Therapy FAQ

Who is eligible for pay what you can therapy?

Sentient Psychotherapy offers low-fee, pay what you can therapy for those who cannot afford the full fee, by participating in our advanced clinical internship program. Working with an advanced clinical intern can be mutually beneficial as you are able to receive low-fee therapy and the therapist receives the training necessary for their professional development. Low-fee therapy is designed to help individuals who do not have out of network coverage or have high insurance deductibles, clients from historically marginalized or underrepresented communities, and those who are experiencing financial hardship. The scale is based on availability and financial need. Please note: we do not offer couples counseling as part of our current program. If you are seeking couples therapy, please contact our office to inquire about sliding scale for couples therapy.

How do I know if I’m eligible?
In order to be eligible for participation in our clinical internship/low-fee program, you must apply and provide income information and an explanation of why you cannot pay the full fee. Although in most cases participation is offered on an honor system, we may occasionally ask for you to verify your income (with a paystub or financial statement).
What are the pay what you can rates?
We offer 3 payment tiers: $50 per session, $75 per session, and $100 per session. You choose what you can afford to pay.
How does the program work?
When you sign up for our low-fee clinical internship program, you will receive a weekly day/time to meet with a therapist either in-person or virtually for a maximum duration of 10 months. A weekly commitment and attendance is required and you agree to follow our in-person or virtual protocols. If you need or want to discontinue therapy prior to the 10 month mark, please notify your therapist. Once you end your treatment, you will no longer be charged for sessions. Sessions that are not cancelled within a 48 hour period are subject to a cancellation fee. If you cancel sessions more than 20% of the time (more than 1 in every 6 sessions), you may be disqualified from the program. Your therapist may ask to audio or video record sessions as part of their training. These recordings are for training purposes only and will not be shared with anyone other than their clinical supervisor. Both your therapist and the clinical supervisor are bound by confidentiality and the limits of confidentiality. All recordings will be deleted within 30 days.
