Multiculturally-Focused Therapy

Mft Page Let's Face ItLet’s face it: We’re living in a time…

… where hate crimes are up, civil liberties are being knocked down, and everyone’s getting called out. For so many of us, the world’s scarier now than ever.

It makes sense that you want a therapist who understands and can relate to your unique experiences. Multiculturally-focused therapy is about providing access to diverse therapists who literally speak your language.

Of course it’s easier to engage in therapy when you and your therapist share some identities. No need to code-switch or spend valuable time in therapy having to explain your background and cultural experiences.

We aim to provide a safe space for you to bloom and grow into your most authentic self with multiculturally-focused therapy personalized just for you.

No matter who you are, your race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or ethnicity should never interfere with your access to excellent therapy.

At Sentient Psychotherapy, we value diversity, representation, and access to quality, multiculturally-focused therapy for everyone.

Mft Page Let's Look At The NumbersLet’s look at the numbers…

Did you know that about 70% of therapists are women, 25% are men, and only 5% of therapists are non-binary?

Similarly, roughly 75% of therapists are white, while only 6% are Hispanic or Latinx, and 4% are Black.

That means if you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ and/or BIPOC communities, your options for working with a queer or BIPOC therapist are low. It makes perfect sense that you may feel more comfortable and connected to a BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ identified therapist.

Similarly, only 10% of therapists are Asians.

If you’re Asian-American, seeking a culturally competent therapist who implicitly understands your concerns and speaks your language can provide you with a deeper sense of comfort and safety.

Even rarer, are sensitive and competent, multiculturally-focused couples therapists who can help interracial and LGBTQ+ couples whose issues may stem directly from their cultural or identity differences.

Diversity in Mental Health Spaces is lacking and we want to change that with multiculturally-focused individual and couples therapy specialized for successful, diverse New Yorkers.

At Sentient Psychotherapy, we have a diverse team of therapists…

… that not only represent the multicultural landscape that is New York City, but who are also well-trained in multiculturally-focused therapy.

20officeEven better, we provide therapy in English, Spanish, French, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Our queer-identified, gender fluid therapists are here to connect with LGBTQ+ folx and expand the intersectionality of our services and clients served.

From the moment you enter our beautiful, calming office, you will experience the same care and support represented in all aspects of our aesthetically pleasing space.

We are committed to anti-oppression in all forms, as well as promoting the rights of all persons and all identities to have a safe space to flourish without facing discrimination or bias.

If you’re like many New Yorkers who aren’t white, straight, cisgender, or for whom English is a second language, you’ll appreciate having a therapist who understands what it means to have faced a lifetime of biases and the issues that come with it.

And if you’re a “guys guy,” seeking help is stigmatized and can be a hurdle when needed, especially if you internalized toxic messages about masculinity within your culture. Having a therapist you can open up to and get real with is not a sign of weakness! Rather, it takes strength and courage to take that first step.

And third-culture and first-generation New Yorkers have unique lived experiences that might be better understood by therapists who share their identities. It’s frightening and exhausting when your sense of security and stability is constantly under threat. Our diverse Team of therapists is here to help.

Regardless of whether your Sentient Psychotherapist shares your specific identities,
all our therapists are trauma-informed, culturally humble, and provide excellent, multiculturally-focused therapy that will help you thrive.
