Catherine Coats Working Together…

If you’re a master of hiding your true self, constantly managing anxiety, self-doubt or grief beneath the surface, I can help you untangle these complex feelings and reconnect with the life you long for. Pushing yourself and getting nowhere is exhausting. Facing obstacles that may be getting in the way of your success and happiness isn’t easy and takes courage. Through our work, you’ll learn to make changes you never thought possible while developing new ways of thinking and feeling so you can thrive, not just survive.

I specialize in guiding high-achieving clients through the reauthoring of their stories around grief & loss, identity, relationships, and life’s major transitions. With curiosity, compassion, and depth, we’ll pinpoint the storylines fueling your anxiety or self-doubt and establish a more grounded, supportive narrative that strengthens your self-esteem while reducing shame, guilt, anger, and loneliness. Find out for yourself how changing your story changes everything.

Using a blend of mindfulness-based therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS/Parts work), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), we’ll equip you with practical tools to create meaningful, lasting change. This values-driven approach empowers you to live with greater intention and purpose, building a life you love – on your own terms.

My greatest clinical strength is my authenticity. I show up fully as myself and welcome you to do the same. As daunting as it may sound, this grounded and vulnerable approach is how we get through to the other side of change with humor, heart and courage.

Education and Experience…

After earning a BA in Political Science and Government in 2016, I moved to New York to pursue a career in advocacy. Through my work in various helping roles – and especially in witnessing the grief and loss faced by vulnerable communities during the COVID-19 pandemic – I came to realize that I wanted to make a more direct and meaningful impact in people’s lives.

Returning to school to receive my Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from New York University, my academic journey solidified my clinical perspective, sparking a particular interest in the intersectionality of culture and identity, systems thinking, and culturally responsive care.

Prior to joining Sentient, I conducted evidence-based, multiculturally-focused psychotherapy at Soho Center with adult clients coping with grief, cross-cultural dynamics and life transitions, as well as provided clinical supervision and mentorship to early career psychotherapists.
